A.E. Wright Middle School Essays

Dear A.E. Wright Middle School students:

Thanks for taking the time to read The Paper Bag Christmas, and for sharing your essays with me. I love hearing from students each year!

To help make sure all of your essays are original, I have taken the liberty of deleting last year's comments from my Blog (sorry guys). But as with last year, I will be selecting at least 3 entries that really catch my attention or touch me in some way, and those students will all receive signed copies of one of my other books.

Looking forward to the A.E. Wright essays! Please post them as comments to this blog. Oh, and be sure to include at least your first name, teacher's name, and what class period you are in!

Dear Mr.Milne,
Hi my name is Kyle, I am a seventh grader at A.E.Wright Middle School which is located in southern California. My language arts teacher is Mrs.Cox. In Mrs.Cox's class we read an amazing book called The Paper Bag Christmas, which will forever change my feelings toward Christmas and generosity. When we read this book it was right before Christmas break. which in my opinion, was the perfect time to read this novel.
In The Paper Bag Christmas I learned that the spirit of Christmas is better than any gift one can receive. Another lesson I learned was that during Christmas you should give back to those less fortunate than yourself. I liked these lessons because if they are followed they can seriously change someone's life for the better. When we got to the amazing ending of the book, the entire class including myself was moved. During group reading many struggled to read with out beginning to choke up because it was so moving and emotional to imagine such circumstances.
The Paper Bag Christmas is important because it teaches people about the true meaning of Christmas and how generosity can make a beneficial difference in peoples lives. This lesson is shown in the book when Molar and his brother help out at the Children's Hospital. Through this experience they learn the true meaning of Christmas from Dr. Ringle, and through there own experiences. One way I have changed after reading this is the way I look at Christmas. After reading this novel, I have become more generous and give more gifts to others during the holidays rather than focusing on receiving gifts. I felt this way after reading about what Katrina gave away at the end of the book.
After reading The Paper Bag Christmas I have become more generous. I hope my classmates feel this way too. There are very few books this inspiring and I hope more are written because it could make a positive difference in the world. Christmas will never be the same for me because I will be more generous and kind. The Paper Bag Christmas was a great read, and I would recommend it to everyone’s
Yours Truly,
Kyle

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Brooke and I am from Mrs. Cox's 5th period language arts class. I recently read your book The Paper Bag Christmas a book that teaches you to be thankful for what you have and that the holiday season is about giving to others not receiving .
I enjoyed The Paper Bag Christmas because the story starts out with two ordinary boys going to see Santa at the mall. The boys wait in a huge line and when they finally get to the front Santa goes on a break. Santa ends up calling the two boys in privatly. The boys Santa shows the boys his inflatable legs. After that part the story twisted. During the whole book I was on the edge of my seat. I also enjoyed the part of the book when the children have gurney races I thought that was very exciting!
Since reading The Paper Bag Christmas I have been much more thankful for what I have. I have also been much more grateful that I am healthy because some kids are not as lucky as I am. Your book also made me realize how much family and friends are important to have. Family and Friends support you and will always be there. Your book has a very important message which is the holiday season is not about receiving from others but giving to others.
Your book taught me to be thankful for all that I have.
Yours truly, Brooke

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Ben and I am in Mrs. Cox's fifth period class. I really liked reading your book, The Paper Bag Christmas. Before I red it, I never really enjoyed holiday books. But after reading your book, I like them. I loved how it was about the Christmas, but it wasn't all about religion. Most Christmas books are all about religion and most people have a hard time relating to them because they may believe in different things.
I liked a lot of things about The Paper Bag Christmas. First, I liked how nobody knew that Doctor Ringle was Santa Clause. The boys had to investigate and think about if it was possible for him to be Santa. Along the way, he met Frank, a janitor that had to work for the hospital because his brother was sick. I liked how they met knew people and they became friends instantly. Also, I liked how the whole story tied together at the end when Molars kids had to go visit
Santa. It was just like the circle of life because now Molar's kids get to experience the same thing that his brother and him did.
Since reading the book, I have been more thankful for every healthy day that I have. Katrina didn't have many healthy days and
I felt bad for her. So, whenever my family or me have a healthy day I will be a lot more thankful. Also, since you wrote this book I think that everybody will look at Christmas differently. They won't think it’s all about getting presents and eating. They will think it's about being thankful, serving people, and being with your family.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Paper Back Christmas and I want you to write second one. Thanks to your amazing book, I now know the real meaning of Christmas. To conclude, The Paper Bag Christmas was a great book that taught me a great lesson about the holiday season.
Yours Truly,
Ben

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Sam. Your novel, The Paper Bag Christmas, was a great read. It is a very inspirational book and it has definitely changed my thoughts about the holidays.
The reason this book was so inspirational and amazing is because of how much work was put into it. For example, the dialogue is great, which brings the story to life. Another reason why it is very good is because of the humor. Molar makes most things comical with his wise choice of words.
Since I have read The Paper Bag Christmas, my care for others has increased. I always cared much for others but after reading this amazing novel, it has gone up a lot. After I got all my gifts for Christmas, I wanted to go out and buy everyone a gift. And as a matter of fact, I did. But that's what the book was written for. To inspire you to give more to the less fortunate. For example, what Molar did for Katrina. This book was so great, it was on my Christmas list.
The Paper Bag Christmas was an amazing and inspirational book. Keep it coming! I'm hoping to have time to read another one of your amazing novels.
Yours truly,
Sam Bevill

Dear Mr. Milne,
The Paper Bag Christmas expresses many valuable lessons. What would you do if you got a horrible disease like cancer? How would make the most out of it? What if you didn't have anyone supporting you through the frightening process? In fact, a couple of my grandparents passed away from the horrible disease. My name is Drew and I'm a seventh grader at A. E. Wright Middle School.
This fantastic book has taught me many important lessons. One lesson is, the true meaning of Christmas is not just about getting toys and presents. I believe the true meaning is to be grateful for having family and friends. Like in your wonderful book, Molar and Aaron make a gigantic list. Everyone knew they weren't going to get everything they wanted. In fact, we don't know if they even received and enjoyed a single toy on their list. By far they did get the best present ever. Helping children in the hospital and becoming a heartbroken girl's friend.
After reading it I have changed in many directions. One thing is that I try to be nice to everyone. Even if they have problems I try to help them out instead of making fun of them. Another way I have changed is I’m so thankful for being healthy. Some people don’t realize how fortunate they are to have both arms or legs. Many kids in the hospital pray to not be sick and other people throw fits about not getting something so little. I’m so thankful that I am healthy.
You should always be happy for what you have instead of being unappreciative for the things that you don’t have. I didn’t realize this until I read your book. Usually I never cry at movies or reading a book. When I read this, honestly, I started crying at the end. Mr. Milne, you have made an extraordinary book that has changed my life and even inspired me to try to change this world. Truth is, if everything single being in this world read your book, there would be such a change in everyone’s hearts. Thank you for writing this book.

Dear Mr.Milne
Hi, My name is Belen, I am a student in Mrs.Cox's class.I personally thing that The Paper Bag Christmas is a very inspiring tale.It made my eyes teary and warmed my heart. I recently told my friend that is in sixth grade the story, it made her eager to read it in seventh grade.
I also loved the fact that the story teaches a lesson to the readers. After i read the novel with my class, I started to feel very bad for the children who have cancer, and I wanted to find a way to help. I also liked the fact that I could picture everything that was happening in the book because of how descriptive it is.
I think if everybody read this book kids would be grateful that they are healthy and don't have cancer and they won't ask for much for Christmas. Also, this book's message tells people that Christmas is about family not about the gifts.

Sincerely,
Belen

Dear Mr. Milne,

My name is Jasmine and I am from Mr.s Cox's sixth period Language Arts class. I love your book The Paper Bag Christmas because I think that it sends a great message to everyone, even me. I've had family before battling with cancer, and it opened up a whole vision to me.

One reason why I like The Paper Bag Christmas was because it had a great sense to humor in some chapters. I love how I would still have a laugh in a serious situation. For example, the reindeer poop had me laughing. It was great. As for another reason, I loved how some of the quotes were related to the chapter showing the true meaning behind the quotes. In chapter one it started out with a little sneak peek of what we're going to find out later in the book as a surprise.

How The Paper Bag Christmas changed me was that I realized that I wasn't being fair to others.Such as not wanting what I got for Christmas. It makes me feel like a coward towards others who didn't have a Christmas at all. As what I can do, I would give back to those who don't have a Christmas at all. That way I can serve to those who really need it.

In conclusion, I would settle all my differences and become a better person than I was before. Thank you Mr. Milne.

Yours truly,
Jasmine

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Elliot, and I want to say a few things about your book The Paper Bag Christmas. I am a student at A.E.Wright. I am in seventh grade, and i am 12.
I have a couple things I want to tell you about, that i liked your book. First, I really liked how you kept a mystery in every chapter. for example, what does Katrina look like with no bag. Or if Dr. Ringle is Santa Clause or not. Another thing I liked was the touching ending. The ending was so sad, yet so beautiful. I loved every bit of the ending.
I have changed a bit because of this book. I now realize that life should be lived to the fullest or you might miss something. Also, I think this is an important book to read for some people because they might learn something Like I did. This book has been a nice group read book. My class read this together and we all loved it.
I hope this helps your outlook on things. This book is good, beautiful, and mysterious. Thank you for writing this book.

Yours truly,
Elliot Evans

Dear Mr.Milne,

My name is Zayd I enjoyed your book and think it is a great read for Christmas time. One of my favorite parts of your book is the ending when katrina was so giving to others. Just imagine getting the most wild and exciting gift ever. These are just a few of the reasons i think your book is a good read.
Secondly i think that your book came to life with the dialogue you added. I especially like it when Molar met Madhu and you wrote his dialogue in a fast like manner. Another reason i liked your book is that you described the detail so amazingly. In the part of the padgant you made me feel like i was in the audience. Also that you made the hospital sound so decorated during the Christmas time. These are just a few reasons why i liked your book.
Also the importance of Mr. Milne's book is teaching kids not to be spoiled or want everything when you don't need it. Including that telling us to be thankful for what we have. Secondly the importance of friends and family and how they should all treat us well and to be happy that we have friends and family. Also that it is good to treat each other right and the way you would want to be treated. These are just a few reasons why i think that The Paper Bag Christmas is a good book.
In conclusion this book has a lot of good dialogue and great subjects that teach us to be grateful. This book is an amazing read and i recommend it. Could this book have a Sequel?

Yours Truly,
Zayd S.

Dear Mr.Milne,
My name is Justin T. and I am 7th grade in Mrs.Cox's sixth period class. I was really moved by your book Paper Bag Christmas, and I also thought it was very well thought out.
One thing I love about the book is that it shows that Christmas brings out the child in all of us. I also realized that it shows than everyone is beautiful in there own special way even if it is on the inside or the out.
I have changed since reading your book the Paper Bag Christmas by learning that for some people life is short. Therefore, live it to a full extent. The importance of the book is that every one needs a friend ant that at certain times we are all friends.
Books can move people in some type of way. Unfortunately in the novel Paper Bag Christmas the way I was moved was through the loss of young Katrina Barlow.
Yours truly,
Justin

Dear Mr.Milne,
My name is Nicole and I live in California, originally from the east coast. I read The Paper Bag Christmas with my seventh grade language arts class. This masterpiece truly moved me beyond words. This book made me laugh, cry, and truly smile. I really need to thank you you for using your time to write this. You're an incredible author and I hope you are going to continue writing.
I really enjoyed The Paper Bag Christmas for many reasons. I loved how well it was written. "Ohmyyes. Mostdefinitely. "Iamverymuchhere. Constantlysoinfact." Madhu was so hilarious. He spoke so quickly! I also adored the fact that this book was so touching. "...so I have told the doctors that you may have my liver. I won't be needing it anymore" Even though Katrina knew she was dying, she still thought of Madhu and his happiness. I also loved that this book comes full-circle, so to speak. Molar's parents take him and his brother to the mall to see "Santa", and the brothers end up working at the hospital as elves for the terminally ill children. Then, in the future, Molar and his wife Lynn take their children to see "Santa" and they become elves for the hospital as well.
Your book is very important. It is important because it highlights on the importance of helping others. It teaches the reader that it is better to give than receive. Katrina shows that, even when she is dying, she still wants the best for others. By giving Frank her trust fund and giving Madhu her liver, Katrina is showing us how giving is so much better than receiving. I have changed since this book. I've been thinking more of others happiness rather than my own. I always help my friends with their difficulties.
I want to thank you for writing this this marvelous book. The Paper Bag Christmas is by far the best Christmas story I have ever read. This book really relates to me, I am very glad that you wrote it. It really gives a great scenario so kids appreciate what they have.
Yours truly,
Nicole Van Newkirk

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Nicole and I am in the seventh grade of A.E. Wright Middle School. My teacher's name is Mrs.Cox and I have her sixth period. I had a great time reading your book because it was easy to read and to understand. I also enjoyed reading it because every chapter, something new and exciting happens. Every chapter was better than the other.
I enjoyed the book more than you can comprehend because like I said before, I could understand almost each word in the book. I liked "The Paper Bag Christmas" also because every chapter had something new and exciting happening. Some examples from the book is when Molar meets Katrina and when Molar breaks his arm. In some of the books I read, I barely understand what the author is trying to say. Although, in "The Paper Bag Christmas", that is not the case. The only two words from the book that I did not know was "Skewed" and "Wayward".
The importance of family, friends, and serving others is that you must always love and support them no matter what. You also must always stay together because its better to be together than alone. I think the importance of this book is to not judge people om what they do or do not have. I also think its about love because Molar has learned the true meaning of friendship. Another importance about the book is the actual meaning of Christmas, not just presents and gifts but loving and caring for other people than yourself, like Santa Claus. The point of this letter is to let you know how you must treat a person no matter what belongings they have. I thought that this book was well written, clear, and easy to read. When I say clear I mean it was pleasant to read and understand. Christmas is about love and care. Thank you Mr. Milne for teaching me what the meaning of Christmas is really about.
Yours truly,
Nicole L.

Dear Mr.Milne

Hi my name is Benjamin and I just finished reading your book. Your book was a very good tale about the true meaning of Christmas. I am thirteen years old and I just read your book. It has taught me a lot. Now I will share with you some of the reasons I liked your book.

One of the reasons I liked your book was because it shows you that you should help out on Christmas. An example is when Molar and Aaron are elves at the hospital to help make the sick children's Christmas a little better. Another reason is because it has taught me to be fortunate of what I have. An example is when Molar is told that all the kids will eventually die and he is shocked when he hears this.

I have changed a lot since I read this book. I have changed because it has taught me what Christmas is truly all about. An example is when Dr.Ringle tells Molar and Aaron that they will be getting nothing for Christmas. The importance of your book is that on Christmas we should be thinking about what we should give instead of getting. It has also taught me the importance of family and friends and that they will help you out if you help them out. I am going to serve others by helping them out more often if they are in need.

I think that this book has taught me a lot about family and friends and also the true meaning of Christmas. I think that this book was a sensation to read and was more than a book about a boy and his brother helping out at a hospital. But that it was a story about the treasures of life such as spending time with with the people that do not have any friends and don't have the great lives that we have. It also had many parts that were very sad but I kept on reading. I think it has taught me I should be fortunate of what I have and think about others. I hope you enjoyed my letter.

Yours Truly,
Benjamin

Dear Mr.Milne,

My name is Allegra, I'm twelve years-old, and attend at A. E. Wright Middle School. I have recently read your famous book, The Paper Bag Christmas. I have enjoyed every second of this book from the shattering of the candy cane to the paper bag angels. This book has told me what friendship is really about, And the true meaning of Christmas.
Although the devastating loss in this book, it has also been an amazing read. I've realized that Mo and Aaron have learned to be a good friend even though they might be a little different. The thing that really caught my eye was that Dr.Ringle has been proven to be Santa Claus. Through everything, Dr.Ringle has been Christopher Kringle this whole time, which has stunned me. Dr.Ringle has shown Aaron and Mo how to be a kind, and caring people.
Your book has changed me in many ways such as, I used to only care about getting presents on Christmas, but now I realized that being with my family and friends is more important than anything else on Christmas.''I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year round'', these words of wisdom by Charles Dickens means to always have the Christmas spirit and to care and give all year round. I think that you are encouraging this along wit friendships. Christmas isn't just about receiving but giving to as many people as you can.
After reading this book, I've learned to cherish what I have and try to not ask for more. The Paper Bag Christmas does not only show how to be a friend or the true meaning of Christmas, but to enjoy your life while you have. This book has opened up my heart and told me how to not take myself for
granted.
Yours truly,
Allegra

Dear Mr.Milne,
Hi my name is Elle and I thought Paper Bag Christmas was a very inspirational book. In this book there is a girl named Katrina who has a brain tumor and has no family to comfort her. Then a boy named Molar comes along and changes her. She was always the one who was picked on and never had any friends. When Molar came along and changed all that.
I liked the book because it shows how small a real Christmas can be. There is a boy in the hospital and his name is Madu and he has liver cancer, but yet he is full of energy. Madu has no idea what Christmas is about but he still celebrates the holidays. I also liked it because in the book there is a boy named Timothy who has cancer but believes that Dr. Ringle is Santa So, he kept the Christmas spirit high.
Since I have read this book I have changed a lot on how I see Christmas. I understand how much each day counts and how valuable it is. Some people may only have a few hours to live or a few days or even a few years to live. In the Paper Bag Christmas taught me to rely spend more time with the people that I love.
In The Paper Bag Christmas I learned what a true Christmas is. In this book is encouraging for everyone and is a wonderful book for all ages. Some people may think it’s not Christmas without gifts but that’s not true and if they truly believe that they should read The Paper Bag Christmas. Never forget you can always make a difference in the world. Yours Truly,
Elle

My name is Clay 6 period Mrs.Coxes class. I enjoyed your book Paper Bag Christmas. I liked when Katrina gave her liver to save Madhu. And when Mo volenteered to help out at the hostibal on his time.
In Paper Bag Christmas I liked when Katrina payed Franks Medical bill for his brother. This book inspiered me to help others. This was the best book iv ever read.
I have learned to help others for no reason. I think the impotence of this book was to get people to do nicer things for others. Id like to thank you Mr.Milne for reminding me of giving and caring of others. Also thanks for a great book

Dear Mr. Milne,
My name is Ben, and I am in Mrs. Cox’s sixth period class. The Paper Bag Christmas is a wonderful book about how children with terminal illnesses can have a normal life full of joy with a few extra priorities. After reading this book, I felt that life had more to it. I felt like there is more to life than just a computer or a phone. I realized that there is someone that could use some cheering up.
In the book, when Molar meets Katrina, hey don’t hit it off well because Molar makes fun of Katrina’s candy cane costume and drops her candy cane. That made me think that Katrina and Molar weren’t going to get along, but I was proven wrong with one of my other favorite scenes. When Molar and Katrina go gurney racing, they make a bet that if Molar wins, Katrina needs to be in the Christmas pageant. If Katrina wins, she would not have to be in the pageant. Molar and Katrina fall down a flight of stairs. Molar breaks his arm and has a concussion. When Katrina falls, she only has a few bruises because she fell on Molar. Katrina agrees to be in the pageant, and from that point on, everything goes right.
After reading The Paper Bag Christmas, I felt like I wanted to be a better person. The importance of you book was to think about the less fortunate and the people that care for them. The importance of family and friends is very important. I’m going to others in many different ways. First I will take all of my old toys and donate them to kids in need. Secondly I’m going to give a care package to the troops.
The Paper Bag Christmas was a great book. If people haven’t read this book people need to. It will change the way they think dramatically. Bravo Mr. Milne. On a job well done.

Yours Truly,

Ben A

Dear Mr.Milne,
My name is Mia and this holiday season my class and I read your book The Paper Bag Christmas. For me this book was inspiring and a really great book to be reading during the holiday season.
I often read novels or stories including adventure or thrillers but when my class started reading Paper Bag Christmas, I immediately had different thoughts on the books I enjoy. To me this book was really well written, in the sense that I never got bored, and there was always something going on for you to read. I also enjoyed how it taught different lessons in each chapter. It showed different sides of looking at life and how you live, and I just really enjoyed that. My favorite part would have to be the ending when everyone was jut giving to one another, as id nothing else mattered. Personally I really had a wonderful time reading this book.
Since reading this book I have changed in many ways, being more curtious, and more caring for people I could get to know or people I knew and didn't have a chance to get to know. The story was filled with many lessons and ways of telling people that it is important to care about that might not have been the most important priority in you life. Also, after reading about how Katrina lost everything and everyone, it made me appreciate everything you have and everyone that is in your life.
In all, The Paper Bag Christmas was just a great book in general. From life lessons, to a great story, the book basically had it all.

Sincerely,
Mia 6th period Cox

Dear Mr.Milne
My name is Danielle. I am in seventh grade at A.E. Wright Middle School I am in Mrs.Cox's sixth period class. I really enjoyed your book. "The Paper Bag Christmas" taught me that it is better to give then to receive. This book was an inspiration to everyone,it was really touching to me the reason why is,I lost one of my closest friends from cancer she was only thirteen. I am happy I got to read this fantastic book and was able to learn what I got the chance to learn.
I also liked "The Paper Bag Christmas" because it taught me not to be greedy and, not to judge someone from what they look like. What I liked in "The Paper Bag Christmas" is that Katrina ended up with her one and only Christmas wish and that was to have a friend but,it turned out she ended up with a few. I thought it was good that they gave Katrina another chance at being there friend even though she was mean to them.
I have changed since reading this amazing book because now I care more for others then I did before I read it. The importance of Mr.Milne's book is that it taught everyone a lesson, that we should be grateful for the good life we have. The other lesson we learned was that it is better to give then to get. I am now gonna serve others with more respect and treat people like I would like to be treated. I will do this like how Mo treated his friends even when Katrina was mean to him, he still showed her respect. I think that was a excellent lesson in the book.
Therefor, I thought this was a fantastic book I will definitely be reading this amazing book again. I also thought the lessons in this book were useful and helpful to everyone. I have learned a lot from this book,it is now one of my favorite books I've read. This book also taught me the real meaning of Christmas. The book also made me think have I been treating people the way I want to be treated? Since,I have read "The Paper Bag Christmas" I have been treating people better then I have in the past. I thank you for sharing your fantastic story with all of us and, for changing me to make me a better person.
Yours Truly,
Danielle

Dear Mr. Milne

My name is Bailey and I am in Mrs. Cox's sixth period class. I have recently been lucky enough to indulge myself into one of your many outstanding books, The Paper Bag Christmas. I enjoy very few types of books, if they are too long, not for me, if they are boring, not for me, nut for some reason, The Paper Bag Christmas hooked me. From the moment I read the first chapter I knew it would be hard to quit until I finished, just as a fish will wriggle until it's free. I loved how this book was about the journey of a true friendship, and the real meaning of Christmas joy! I choked up and I laughed for many reasons. I am definitely putting this book on my personal list of favorites.
After I was told we had to read ANOTHER class book, I thought, “We just read one, and why would we read a book called The Paper Bag Christmas?" Although, immediately after the first chapter, I realized I was wrong. The whole idea of the plot had me guessing what would happen next! I was immediately hooked and I was actually a bit disappointed when I was told I couldn’t read ahead. As I grew further and further into the book, I could only try to push away the thought that all good things must come to an end. I was truly upset because I had finally fallen in love... with a book! Okay, maybe I’m over exaggerating just a little bit, but I do hope there will be a sequel so the great feelings can flood back once again.
I believe you wrote this book to show and express the true meaning of Christmas and the feelings you should get out of it as well as to share that kids, people for that matter, that have a terminal illness, are people just like us no matter what they look like or how they act. For example, in the story Mo meets a girl named Katrina. She had a brain tumor and always wore a paper bag on her head due to the fact that she was embarrassed of the way she looked. Although in the beginning Mo was FORCED to spend time with Katrina, later he learns that she is a very warm hearted sweet person that had a tough past.
Overall, this book for me has been like a journious adventure with hills to climb, but a great view once i got to the top. I'm sure that whoever is lucky enough to come across this written masterpiece will be lost in a trance just as I was. They might even read it twice, but after it all they will realize they have been lucky to indulge in such a book as well.

Sincerely,
Bailey
